Car Hire Near Dubrovnik Old Town
Last updated: 2026-06-25
TL;DR
- You cannot drive into the Old Town — it is pedestrian-only, no exceptions.
- We hand over cars at our Gruž office (3 km · 8 min) or deliver free to your hotel.
- Park at the Ilijina Glavica garage; street zones 1–3 are paid and fill fast in summer.
- Skip the car on Old Town days; rent it for Ston, Cavtat, Montenegro, or Mostar.
Straight answer first: no rental car can enter the Old Town — the entire historic center inside the walls is closed to traffic. If you’re staying inside the walls or near Pile Gate, we hand your keys over at our Gruž office, 3 km and about 8 minutes away, or we deliver the car to your hotel for free.
Why can’t you drive into the Old Town?
Because there are no roads inside it. The historic center of Dubrovnik has been pedestrian-only for decades: the polished stone of the Stradun, the side alleys, and the long stairways were laid out centuries before cars existed and physically cannot take them. The whole ensemble — enclosed by the Walls of Dubrovnik, a stone circuit about 1,940 meters long — has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and the city keeps vehicles out to protect it.
The closest a car gets is the turnaround in front of Pile Gate, used by buses and taxis for quick drop-offs, and the roads that ring the walls on the landward side. Accept that from the start and the logistics become simple.
Where do we hand over cars for Old Town stays?
Two ways: at our Gruž office or at your accommodation. Both are free.
| Handover option | Where | Time from Pile Gate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gruž office | Vukovarska 17, next to the port | 8 min by taxi or bus · ~35 min on foot | Free |
| Hotel delivery | Your hotel or apartment, anywhere in the city | We come to you | Free |
Most guests staying inside the walls choose delivery. Tell us your hotel or apartment when you book; if the address sits inside the pedestrian zone, we meet you at Pile Gate — two minutes from most doors in the old city — with the paperwork ready. Handover takes about 10 minutes: licence check, a quick walk-around of the car, keys, done.
If you’d rather come to us, the office at Vukovarska 17 is right next to the port. That’s an 8-minute taxi or city bus ride, or roughly a 35-minute walk if you feel like stretching your legs along the harbor.
Flying in? Skip the city handover entirely and collect the car at arrivals instead — see our airport car rental page. The airport at Čilipi is about 20 km and 25 minutes south of the city.
Where do you park if your hotel is in the Old Town?
Use the Ilijina Glavica garage. It’s the nearest dependable parking to the walls, roughly a 10-minute walk from Pile Gate. Street parking around the historic center is charged in zones 1–3, and in July and August a free space effectively does not exist.
Our suggested arrival-day routine:
- Drive to the Pile Gate drop-off loop and unload your bags — you get a few minutes, like an airport curb.
- Park the car at Ilijina Glavica.
- Walk back down to your accommodation, about 10 minutes.
For garage rates, how the street zones are priced, and the hours when cruise traffic makes circling pointless, we break it all down in our Dubrovnik parking guide.
Do you actually need a car for an Old Town stay?
Not for the Old Town itself. The walls, the Stradun, the cable car base station, and the Lokrum ferry are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, so on sightseeing days a car only adds parking cost and hassle.
You do want one for day trips. Ston and its walls are about an hour up the coast, Cavtat is a 30-minute drive south, and Kotor Bay in Montenegro or Mostar in Bosnia each make a comfortable full day — our cars may cross both borders for a €45 fee that includes the green card. Routes and timings are mapped in our day trips guide.
The pattern that saves the most money: book the car only for the days you leave the city. Economy models start at €39 per day with no deposit — see our cheapest rates — and most US visitors take the automatic option at €62 per day. Every rate includes unlimited mileage, CDW insurance, a free second driver, and free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup.
How do you book delivery to your hotel?
Check availability online, pick your dates, and add your accommodation address in the booking notes. Paula confirms the exact handover time on WhatsApp, usually within the hour during working hours (08:00–20:00 daily in season). Since cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup, you can lock in a car for your day-trip days now and fine-tune the plan once you’re here.
