TL;DR

  • Automatics from €62/day, all-inclusive, free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup.
  • Three always-automatic classes: compact (€62), SUV (€72), convertible (€95).
  • US and Canadian licenses in Latin script accepted; IDP recommended, not enforced.
  • Automatics sell out first in Croatia — book 6–8 weeks ahead for July–August.

Yes, you can rent an automatic in Dubrovnik — we keep three fully automatic classes in our fleet year-round, starting at €62 per day all-inclusive. Collect the keys at the airport with a meet & greet at arrivals, or at our Gruž office next to the cruise port, and cancel free up to 48 hours before pickup.

If you learned to drive in the US or Canada, this page answers the four things you actually need to know: which cars are automatic, why they cost a little more here, what your license needs to say, and how early to book for summer.

Why do automatic cars sell out first in Croatia?

Because they are scarce. Rental fleets in Croatia — like most of Europe — are still predominantly manual; automatic transmission has historically been the exception on European roads rather than the rule. Meanwhile, nearly every arriving American or Canadian driver asks for one, because that’s what they drive at home.

The math only works one way. A driver who can handle a manual can always take an automatic, but an automatic-only driver cannot take a manual. So when a summer week gets busy, the automatic side of every local fleet empties first — usually weeks before the manuals do. The squeeze is worst in July and August, when direct US flights land at DBV daily and cruise traffic through Gruž peaks.

Which of our cars are automatic?

Three of our six classes are automatic on every single booking, and a fourth — the compact — can be reserved with either gearbox.

ClassExample model€/day (high season)SeatsGood for
Compact AutomaticOpel Astra AT625Couples, city stays, day trips — our pick for US visitors
Compact SUVNissan Qashqai or similar725High clearance for hill villages and rough parking
ConvertibleVW T-Roc Cabrio or similar954Coastal drives with the top down

Rates are 2026 high-season and all-inclusive; November–April runs roughly 30–40% lower. Two classes stay manual only: the €39/day economy Fiat Panda — the star of our cheap car rental in Dubrovnik page — and the €129/day 9-seater van. If your group needs nine seats plus an automatic gearbox, message us and we’ll quote alternatives.

What’s included in the €62/day price?

Everything you need to drive away, with no add-on menu at the desk: unlimited mileage, CDW insurance, theft protection, a free second driver, 24/7 roadside assistance, a full-to-full fuel policy, and free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. There is no credit-card surcharge, and you can pay by Visa, Mastercard, or Amex — or in cash at pickup.

One honest caveat: a refundable deposit hold of €200–400 applies to automatic classes. Our no-deposit offer covers the manual economy class only.

Pickup works two ways. At the airport in Čilipi — about 20 km and 25 minutes south of the city — our desk lead Marko meets you at arrivals and tracks your flight, so a late landing never loses the booking; details on the airport pickup page. Or collect at our office at Vukovarska 17 in Gruž, next to the port.

Do US and Canadian licenses work in Croatia?

Yes. A US or Canadian license printed in Latin script is accepted here, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended but not enforced for tourist stays under 30 days. The Croatian Ministry of the Interior (mup.gov.hr) publishes the official rules for foreign drivers and border crossings.

Our own requirements are simple: minimum age 21 (23 for the SUV and convertible), license held at least 2 years, and a €7/day young-driver fee under 25. Croatia has used the euro and been part of Schengen since January 2023, so if you’re arriving from elsewhere in the EU, there’s no currency exchange and no border queue to plan around.

Is an automatic easier on Dubrovnik’s roads?

Noticeably. The approach roads between the D8 coastal road and the old town drop through steep, tight switchbacks, and in summer you will do hill starts in queued traffic on most of them. In an automatic with hill-hold, that’s a non-event. In an unfamiliar manual you’ve owned for an hour, it’s the most stressful moment of the trip — especially with a scooter parked a foot off your rear bumper.

A few local rules worth knowing before you set off: the old town itself is pedestrian-only, so park at the Ilijina Glavica garage and walk in. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 on open roads, 110 on expressways, and 130 on motorways, and the alcohol limit is 0.5‰ — zero for drivers under 25. For live road, traffic, and ferry conditions, check HAK, the Croatian Auto Club, before longer day trips.

When should you book an automatic for July or August?

Six to eight weeks ahead. That’s the point at which our three automatic classes typically go fully reserved for peak-season weeks, and once they’re gone, the nearest alternatives are often airport-desk agencies at materially higher walk-up rates.

Booking early costs you nothing here: cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup and there’s no card surcharge, so a reservation is a free option on your dates. Check availability and lock in your car in about two minutes. If your dates are still moving, or you need a long-term or luxury quote, send Paula a message or WhatsApp +385 91 600 1201 — she answers personally, usually within the hour during working hours (08:00–20:00 daily in summer).

Quick answers

Are automatic rental cars available in Dubrovnik?

Yes. We run three fully automatic classes — compact (€62/day), SUV (€72/day), and convertible (€95/day) — plus a compact class bookable in either gearbox. In July and August they sell out 6–8 weeks ahead, so reserve early.

Why do automatics cost more than manuals in Croatia?

Most fleet cars in Croatia and the wider EU are manual, so automatics are scarce while demand from North American visitors is high. Our automatic compact is €62/day versus €54/day for the manual compact — an €8/day premium.

Can I rent a car in Croatia with a US or Canadian license?

Yes. Any license printed in Latin script is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is recommended but not enforced for stays under 30 days. Drivers must be 21+ (23+ for SUV and convertible) with a license held at least 2 years.

Which car classes come with automatic transmission?

Three classes are always automatic: Compact Automatic (Opel Astra AT, €62/day), Compact SUV (Nissan Qashqai, €72/day), and Convertible (VW T-Roc Cabrio, €95/day). The VW Golf compact class (€54/day) comes in manual or automatic, subject to availability.

How far ahead should I book an automatic for July or August?

Book 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August pickups — automatics are the first cars to sell out in peak season. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup, so reserving early carries zero risk.
